My twenty-year old daughter, Amber, is a self-proclaimed “control freak.” She shared with me the other day how challenging it is for her to be in a situation where she doesn’t feel like she can control what’s happening. I realized that many of us experience a similar challenge.

A few days later, Amber awoke to what my wife and I have come to refer to as an Inherited Purpose attack. Amber was upset about the amount of money in her bank account. How it felt to her at the time was “I don’t have any money. What am I going to do?” I think most of us can relate to such a feeling. Again, it’s a sense of not being in control of the situation, so, after she’d calmed down a little bit I asked to explore this with her. She somewhat reluctantly agreed.

After reminding her of our original conversation about control, I asked her, “What can you control?” to which I received only a confused look, so I tried again. “Can you control the weather?”

“No,” she replied.

“Can you control the circumstances that happen around you? For example, can you completely control whether or not someone will rear end you when you’re driving?”

“No,” she replied again.

“So, what can you control?”

At this point Amber realized where I was going with the inquiry so she gave me what she thought was the right answer, or at least the answer she thought her dad, the life coach, was looking for.

“My thoughts,” she replied smugly. (Remember, Amber has been raised for her entire 20 years by not one, but two life coaches. It’s easy for her to drop into the role of smart rat.)

“Really?” I replied. “You can control your thoughts? So, this morning when you awoke to ‘I don’t have any money,’ you controlled those thoughts?”

Now confused that her smart rat answer hadn’t hit the mark, she hesitated before replying, “No, not really.”
“Okay, so you don’t have complete control of your thoughts? What do you have control of?”

She thought about this for quite a while before shrugging her shoulders. “I don’t know.”

“Well, how about trying this on. You have control over which thoughts and feelings you hold onto.”

As she thought about that for a moment, her face began to brighten. “So, I might have the thought of not having enough money, but I don’t have to stay stuck with it.” It came out as much as a question as a statement.

“That’s right,” I replied. “It’s like the old Zen parable that goes something like this. ‘Thoughts are like birds flying over your head. While you may not be able to keep them from flying over, you have much to say about whether they nest in your hair.’”

This came up again later in the day when I received a message from one of my coaching clients. The client had just completed going through Passage #2 of the Life On Purpose Process that creates a new way of relating to your life purpose by distinguishing the old, cultural perspective that your life purpose is all about what you’re here to do, and then looking at a new way of viewing a life purpose. The Life On Purpose Perspective suggests that your life purpose is the context, vessel or container into which you pour your life. This can be a pretty heady, even a transforming shift in one’s worldview.

My client’s question was, “Can it really be as simple as changing the shape of the container that holds our lives?”
My answer to my client and now to you is, “Yes, as long as you remember that simple isn’t always the same as easy, though in my experience it doesn’t have to be nearly as difficult as many of us make it out to be.”

It’s all about realizing what we can control — whether to allow certain thoughts and their accompanying feelings to simply fly over our head or will we allow them to nest in her hair. The Life On Purpose Process is about helping people to take control of their lives by choosing what thoughts they will hold onto and which they will let pass over head. It’s both that simple and that challenging.

The best news I can end on is to also let you know that as you become crystal clear about your true, Divinely Inspired Life Purpose and equally clear about your Inherited Purpose, staying on purpose becomes easier. It doesn’t happen over night but it does happen as long as you stay committed to living a life on purpose and practice purposeful patience and persistence.

This past March 2nd was Dr. Seuss’s birthday. He would have been 108 years old this year. So, I thought it appropriate to spend a little time reading one of my favorite Dr. Seuss’s books — Horton Hears a Who. After all, I’ve been feeling a little like a citizen from Who-ville lately, so I figured what better way to get a little clarity around why I’ve felt this bizarre way.

Here’s what I learned. First, it felt strange as a 62-year old man checking out a children’s picture book from the library, especially without having a grandchild in toe, but I’m glad I did, for here’s what else I learned, or really relearned. Dr. Seuss’s book are transformational, in that they can be read at many different levels. So I’d like to share what I gleaned from reading the book this time around, which also explains why I’ve been feeling like a citizen of Who-ville, and more importantly, why I am inviting you to become a citizen as well.

Let’s start by identifying the major characters of the story and the role I see each of them playing, starting with the main character, Horton.
In my Life On Purpose Perspective interpretation of the story, Horton is a visionary — someone who sees (or in Horton’s case hears) what others cannot.

Kangaroo and little Kangaroo are the “others” who simply aren’t able to see or hear what Horton the visionary can so they pooh-pooh his vision and try to throw cold water on it. (Know anyone in your life like that?) It’s a classic case of the Inherited Purpose shaping their actions rather than their true, Divinely Inspired Life Purpose.

Kangaroo and little Kangaroo are well supported by the Wickersham brothers (a family of monkeys) and the buzzard, Vlad Vlad-i-koff who represents the establishment that’s dedicated to maintaining the status quo. (After all, the Inherited Purpose is threatened by change.)

Now, Dr. Seuss does a clever thing that other talented writers do on occasion. He uses some of his settings as characters starting with Who-ville, which in my interpretation represents a new possibility for life — one that Visionary Horton can see/hear but that the established order of things cannot or will not believe in.

Another setting that worth looking at is the clover field where Vlad drops Horton’s sprig of clover on which sets the dust particle that is the home of the Whos. The clover field is all the stuff in our lives that can distract us from staying aware of our vision for what’s possible. Those distractions are such things as the following, especially if indulged in to an obsessive level:
• The internet
• Television shows (especially reality TV)
• Video games
• Family dramas, etc.
• Over indulgence in the acquisition of stuff

So there you have it. Well, not quite. You might be asking, “But what about the citizens of Who? Who do the Who represent?” Why, they are you and me — other visionaries who see and may even be living in the new possibility paradigm to some degree.

You see, the whole point to this story (at least my interpretation if not Dr. Seuss’s) is that we each need to join our voices so that the new possibility paradigm of a world that works for everyone (or as I like to refer to it, a World On Purpose) can be heard and realized…yes, even by the establishment that has been dedicated to maintaining the status quo.

And it’s happening all around the world. Just like the citizen’s of Seuss’s Who-ville gathered together in their Town Square and cried, “We are here! We are here!”, so too are we. And while the transformation may not be happening as swiftly or as completely as we’d like, all there is to do is to keep shouting, louder and longer.

Just like the citizens of Who-ville pulled out all the stops, using their tin kettles, brass pans, garbage pail tops and old cranberry cans, we are learning to use our resources to magnify our voices as well — the internet, blogging, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more. So, keep shouting, “We are here! We are here!”

You may also realize that you’ve become one of the other characters in the story — Jo-Jo (who “lives in the Fairfax Apartments — Apartment 12-J”). Jo-Jo was the ‘shirker’, the very small shirker who was standing in his apartment bouncing his Yo-Yo, “not making a sound! Not a yipp! Not a chirp!”

That’s okay. Because remember, once the Mayor and he climbed to the Eiffelberg Tower, “the lad cleared his throat and he shouted out, “YOPP!” And it was that “one small, extra Yopp” that put it over the top.

Their voices were heard!

So, YOPP away little Jo-Jo’s and I’ll YOPP away with you.

As the founder and director of an organization with a name like Life On Purpose Institute, I guess it’s not surprising to hear me say that I feel that one of the most important matters that anyone can do for themselves and the world is to become clear what their true purpose in life is and to then live true to it. So, I’d like to point out some of the many benefits to knowing and living your life purpose.

These are some of the benefits most commonly shared by the clients of Life On Purpose Institute as well as ones that I have personally experienced by clarifying and living my own life on purpose.

Focus
When you clearly know your life purpose, it becomes a truing mechanism allowing you to focus more clearly on what matters most to you. Many people report that this has been one of the most valuable benefits to going through the Purpose Process ™, especially once they begin to use their life purpose to make their decisions and choices in where and how they are going to invest their time, energy, money and talents.

The other side of this coin is that oftentimes a life off purpose is unfocused and scattered. Much like a boat without a rudder, when you don’t know your true purpose in life, your life tends to be thrown all over the place by the currents of circumstances.

Passion
For many people clarifying their life purpose becomes the key to unlocking their passion for life. The passion becomes the fuel that propels them forward in expressing their life purpose, often in extraordinary ways beyond anything they would have considered before they clarified their purpose.

A life off purpose is often devoid of any real passion. The experience can be a little bit like the movie, Pleasantville. At the start of the movie, everyone in Pleasantville was living a dull, black and white life, but over time they began to tap into their passion and learned that life could be a beautiful multi-colored experience, filled with passionate moments.

Being Unstoppable
People living on purpose become unstoppable, particularly the longer they live true to their purpose and the more they allow their purpose to shape their life. At the same time, purposeful people aren’t positional in their being unstoppable. They have learned that it’s not necessary to go through life like a bull, ramming through anything that tries to get in their way of living their purpose. They’ve found that often a little patience, coupled with persistence can go a long way, as does surrendering to the timeline of a Higher Power.

People without clarity of purpose often finds themselves stopped or stuck in life, which isn’t surprising because they haven’t tapped into their passion so they’re like a high powered automobile without any fuel in their tank.

Fulfillment
Living a life in which you are regularly expressing your life purpose and allowing it to shape your decisions, your thoughts, feelings and actions is simply a whole lot more fulfilling. A life on purpose is filled with meaning, and people on purpose realize they are making a difference in the world simply by being in the world. Then, whatever they choose to do in the world to express their life purpose is like icing on the cake.

People living off purpose often have a life filled with meaning as well. Unfortunately, the meaning that they have ascribed to life stems from fear and preoccupies them with the need to struggle and suffer. Remember, “suffering is optional” in this world, and knowing your purpose is the key to making this important shift.

Living a Value-based Life
You will learn as you delve more deeply into the Purpose Process ™ that an integral component of a person’s life purpose are their “core values” — those intangibles of life that mean the most to them. Our core values are at the heart of all the values we’ve been taught we “should value.” Think of it like 3 concentric circles. The largest circle is composed of our “should values,” the next circle inside that one is our “chosen values” – the should values that we actually choose to hold onto and live from. The last circle is our “core values” — those chosen values that truly matter most to us. Since these core values are an integral part of your life purpose, when you are living a life on purpose, you are living a “value-based” life, rather than a “lifestyle” based life.

People living off purpose are often focused on living more from the outer circle of their “should values” — what is often described as “keeping up with the Joneses.” In a lifestyle based life, the focus is on life looking a certain way — the way we were taught our life was supposed to look. The focus is often more on stuff and doing what’s expected of us, not what gives us the most joy.

Fun
Let’s face it, living on purpose is simply a lot more fun than living a life based in fear and shoulds. People who know their life purpose and are living it have a renewed zest for life. They can bring purposeful play to almost any situation and find or create ways to have each day be a reflection of their true joy and purpose.

Recently, I took time off from my normal work routine to take in an afternoon matinee. The movie I saw was “The Legend of Bagger Vance.” While I thoroughly enjoyed ‘playing hooky from work’ and the movie in general, there was one line that stood out above all the rest, and the main lesson I was there to learn that day. The caddy, Bagger Vance, said, “God is happiest when his children are at play.” I keep that line on my desk lamp so I won’t forget. Whenever I’m feeling like my work is drudgery, or there’s a heaviness or effort involved, I know in those moments I’ve shifted from expressing my life purpose to something else.

People who live off purpose lives have bought into the idea of ‘No pain, no gain.’ It doesn’t have to be that way. Sure, there may be times when you need to exert yourself more diligently, but that doesn’t mean you need to suffer while doing it. I lift weights 3 times a week as part of my health and fitness routine. Part of the object to lifting increasing amounts of weight is to fatigue the muscles so they will grow and become stronger.

At the same time, this doesn’t mean that I need to suffer while I’m straining. I have the choice to sweat with enjoyment or to sweat while complaining about how hard it is, or how unfair it is that I have to be stuck in my gym. I choose to bring joy and fun to my life and so can you.

Integrity
For me, a life on purpose is a life of ultimate integrity. It’s a life that is whole and complete. People who know their purpose and are living it, know who they are and why they are here. They live true to their core values as they serve themselves and others through the expression of their life purpose.

People who are living off purpose simply haven’t found themselves yet. There’s nothing wrong with them, there’s simply something missing — their knowing their life purpose, which is why the Purpose Process ™ was created — to provide people with a means of putting into their life this important missing ingredient.

Trust / Faith
As people clarify their life purpose and begin to live true to it, many of them report a surprising increase in synchronicity and serendipity in their lives. It’s as though the Universe is rewarding them for the courage to live true to their purpose. With this comes a deepening in trust and faith for most of these people, as they realize that indeed there is a greater force in the Universe than themselves and they are an integral part of that force.

People living off purpose are often slow to trust anything they can’t see and touch. Coming from fear, trusting looks like a bad idea, and they have plenty of evidence for not trusting — all the times they did and were hurt. That’s why it takes real courage to live on purpose. No where will you hear me say that a life on purpose is risk free — anything but. But I will say from my own experience and from the experience of the hundreds of people I’ve met living on purpose, the risk is well worth it.

Grace
According to the dictionary, grace is “the unmerited divine assistance given man…” and people living on purpose often report living a grace-filled life. When you commit to living true to your purpose, something amazing begins to happen. The Universe lines up with your intention and commitment. Perhaps this quote says it best:

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creativity there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans:

That the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.

All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising ones favor all manner of assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets: Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it; boldness has genius, power and magic in it.” W. H. Murray

Flow
And perhaps we can summarize the other 9 benefits under this last one. People living on purpose live in the flow of the Universal stream of consciousness. Rather than fighting against the current, they allow the current of what’s wanting to happen to happen. They allow what’s wanting to flow to flow. They know that while they may never completely understand or comprehend God’s divine design and plan for this Universe, they can still be an integral part in its realization.

I first heard the terms in the early nineties, starting with downsizing. Companies were doing it so why couldn’t individuals, but to me it sounded a little too drastic. Then I happened upon the phrase, “rightsizing your life,” and that resonated, in large part because I realized that was what Ann and I were in the process of doing, as were many others in the “voluntary simplicity movement.”

So, what is it? Well, here’s a few questions offered by RightsizingYourLife.com that will help to define rightsizing:

Have you ever felt owned by your possessions, or weighed down by your “stuff?” Does the idea of creating a clutter-free home or a simpler living environment sound appealing? Are you looking for a way to make your empty nest feel like a fresh space for a new chapter in life? Are you perhaps scaling back for a happier retirement? If so, Rightsizing Your Life® is for you.

So, how do you know when it’s time to rightsize your life? Here are some of the “clinical signs” that suggest it’s time or even well past time:

Feeling overwhelmed by your life: You know the feeling. It feels like it doesn’t matter how fast you run or how much you do, you’re ‘to do’ list just keeps getting longer and longer. On top of it all, you’re enjoying your life less and less. Sure sign it’s time to rightsize your life.

Your possessions own you rather than vice versa: Like Ciji Ware says in the above quote, you may have accumulated so much stuff that it all owns you or you feel weighed down by it. This is especially true in this day of so many modern, high-tech conveniences. I mean, I love my ‘techy toys’…after all, I’m a man. I’m supposed to. I’m typing on one of my favorite ones right now, while listening to music on my iTouch. But here’s the thing. What happens when the high tech toys we’ve come to depend upon, break down or need maintenance? It’s real easy to have our stuff take over our lives.

You keep putting off the things that really matter: I see this a lot in my coaching clients who often come to me in various stages of overwhelm and/or burnout. They have all these dreams they want to do someday — write a book, volunteer in the community, travel around the world, spend more time with their kids, etc. And yet, they’ve been wanting to do these things someday for decades. Meanwhile, their life is run by their lifestyle…the old “keeping up with the Jones’ mentality.”

If any of these signs hit close to home, keep reading. There is a way out.

How to Start Rightsizing Your Life

Working in vs. Working on: Let’s start with a quick coaching distinction that can begin the process of rightsizing. I call it “Working in your life vs. Working on your life.” I borrowed and adapted it from E-Myth author and consultant, Michael Gerber. (You can read more about the distinction here.) Basically, it means you need to find a balance where you’re not just living your life — ie, working in your life, or what often results in being over-run by your life, but you’re also devoting quality time and energy to working in your life. That means you’ve time to dream, to plan, to imagine what could be the most satisfying and fulfilling life possible for you. To do this you need to:

Carve Out Quality Time: And I do mean “carve out” because if you’re simply waiting for the time to show up on your calendar for this all important ‘working on your life time,’ well, it’s never going to show up there. You have to carve it out. You have to make an appointment with yourself, and maybe with your loved ones, then keep that appointment. Before you finish with that first ‘working on’ time, you then need to set your next appointment. This is called designing your life, rather than drifting through life (or riding the tsunami of your overwhelmed life).

Use the “Elephant Eating Principle”: We all know that the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time, and that’s also the ideal way to start rightsizing your life — in small, persistent bites. Meet with yourself and your family to first get clear what’s working and what’s not working in your lives. Then create a plan for rightsizing it, and break that plan into small, digestible and manageable bite-size actions. Support each other in moving forward, then meet again to assess your progress.

Follow the “Breadcrumbs of Your Passion:” I’m a big advocate of the power of passion and purpose to help steer our way to the life that we really want. As I’ve often said, you may not be able to see exactly where the path of passion-filled breadcrumbs are leading you, but you won’t be disappointed with where you end up. This is closely related to the last point.

Let the Inner Work Lead You to the Outer Actions: True transformation happens on the ‘inside’ with the inner work of being, thinking and feeling that includes getting in touch with your passions and what really matters to your life. That inner work will then lead you to the outer actions that create outer change, and this combination leads to overall results of a downsize life that is fun, flexible, freeing and fulfilling.

One Other Resource

How about a Digital Short on Kindle on how Ann and I, and others simplified their lives: Simple Living: A Digital Short on Living Simply in a Complex World

Now It’s Your Turn

Let me hear from you. What ‘nuggets of gold’ did you glean from this article? Do you have a success story you’d care to share about rightsizing your life that will inspire others to do the same? Share it here. How about some other resources that will help people rightsize their life. Maybe you have a question or comment. Go ahead…share it. I double dog dare you. <G>
